math ~ students are responsible for the new vocabulary for sections 5.1 and 5.2.

9f students need to have the 5.1 booklet completed for Monday.

Students who were absent MUST make some effort to catch up or they will be very behind!!

They have sheets that practice the terms and have some definitions on them. Currently, the students should know the following terms:
Constant, Variables, Equation, Expression, Evaluate, Term, Monomial, Binomial trinomial, polynomial, degree of a term, degree of a polynomial

Science~ we have started a unit on electricity. We are working on terms associated with static electricity. Students should review their notes and read sections 9.2 and 9.3. Questions for 9.3 have also been assigned.

Students are encouraged to draw the figures in their notebooks to help math corresponding sides. It might be useful to redraw some of the figures as two separate triangles when they might be shown together in the text.

Important to remember....
*the order is important, for example, if you start with the one you are looking for, go back to that figure for the numerator of the second fraction. Keep one fraction on the top and the other on the bottom!

* scale vs scale factor
scale is a ratio whereas scale factor will be one number. If it is made bigger (an enlargement), the scale factor is greater then one. If it is made smaller (reduction), the scale factor is less then 1.

Science
9j and 9i have been assigned 4.3 page 108. This should be done for next class. Some students finished in class time.

Students have outlines and should be reviewing. Students should come prepared with specific topics or questions regarding the exams.

Example of expectation:
In a bag of red and green sweets, the ratio of red sweets to green sweets is 3:4. If the bag contains 120 green sweets, how many red sweets are there?
Step 1: Assign variables :
Let x = red sweets
Write the items in the ratio as a fraction.

Step 2: Solve the equation
Cross Multiply
4 × x= 3 × 120
4x=360
Isolate variable x

Answer: There are 90 red sweets.

Vocabulary for chapter 4 (math)
Enlargement
• an increase in the dimensions of an object by a constant factor, can be 2-D or 3-D

Scale Factor
• the constant factor by which all dimensions of an object are enlarged or reduced in a scale drawing

Reduction
• a decrease in the dimensions of an object. Example a reduction of ½

Scale
• A comparison between the actual size of an object and the size of its image. This can be expressed as a ratio, as a fraction, as a percent, in words, or in a diagram. For example, a scale of 1 cm : 50 km on a map means that 1 cm on the map represents 50 km.

Scale diagram
• A diagram that is similar to the actual figure or object. It may be smaller than or larger than the actual object, but must be in the same proportions.

Proportion
• An equation that says that two ratios or two rates are equal. It can be written in fraction form ,or in ratio form .

Corresponding Angles
• Angles that have the same relative position in two geometric figures.
Corresponding Sides
• Sides that have the same relative position in two geometric figures.

Similar
• Figures that have the same shape, but different size. They have equal corresponding angles and proportional corresponding sides.
Polygon
• A two-dimensional closed figure made of three or more line segments.

Math i - returned and reviewed test, reviewed section 3.1,3.2,3.3. Students wrote a little "chekup quiz". Homework assigned # 1 - 11 page 111. Students had 10 minutes in class to begin this homework.

Math f - corrected 1-11 page 111. No assigned homework , however, stydents are expected to review exponent rules and order of operations.

Science f - 1-5 on subatomic particle sheet side 2.

Note- some students still do not have a calculator for math class! This is necessary in order to complete certain sections with speed and accuracy.

We begin section 2.8 today and will assign the element super hero project - due November 24.
2.8 - Atmosphere p. 60-61
Notes for 2.8
The atmosphere is a mixture of nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%), and other gases (1%). High above the planet, the atmosphere becomes thinner until it gradually reaches space. It is divided into five layers. Most of the weather and clouds are found in the first layer.

Over the past century, greenhouse gases and other air pollutants released into the atmosphere caused global warming, ozone holes, and acid rain.

Nitrogen (N2) makes up most of our Atmosphere. It reacts with O2 under some conditions to make NO2. NO2 at low levels is smog (Nitrogen Dioxide).
Argon (Ar) does not combine. It exists as single atoms. Often used in light bulbs.

Oxygen (O2 and O3) - O2 makes up about 21% of the air that we breathe. It is necessary for life.

O3 - is Ozone:
Upper Atmosphere Ground level
Good - necessary Bad - hazardous
Bad - Hazardous damages plants, animals, and causes respiratory illnesses
absorbs ultraviolet radiation produced by the combustion of fosil fuels
destroyed by CFC’s, other air pollutants

Carbon Dioxide :
It is a compound of Carbon and Oxygen (1 Carbon 2 Oxygen)
in well mixed air it is about 0.03%.
This has almost doubled in 25 years.
It is necessary for life.

Carbon Monoxide
It is a compound of Carbon and Oxygen (1 Carbon 1Oxygen)
Body uses it as oxygen, instead of delivering O2 to body, cells deliver CO -causes damage or death to body

due to the assembly both science and math were shortened consdierably. In math we went over the fractions 1-8 from the sheet. 8-11 assigned for homework. Students should seek extra help immediatly if they are having difficulty with this concept.
Things to remember... move the negative to the top, simplify signs, get a LCD and make them equivalent. Simplify as directed watching the signs - remember...a difference in signs - get the difference in the numbers and keep the sign of the number with the greatest absolute value ( farthest from 0)

Science f - we had time to do the 1 - 20 elements quiz.

Math 9e/i
9e - homework : complete sheet "exponents" for next class.

Due to the high number of absences in all classes, it has been very difficult to move forward in our curriculum in moothly! I understand that when a student is out sick they may not be able to do much school work. However, when they return, each student will be responsible for making an effort to catch up on work missed. To help facilitate this, I will offer extra help at Luch time November 5 and 9 at 12:15 in my classroom. If a student will be absent for an extended period of time, please contact me and I can send home some work. I will post further extra help days shortly. Students may see me individually for a different arrangement. I will do my best to minimize assessments at this point as too many students are absent. We will have an assignment on exponents and scientific notation next week. We are almost finished of Chapter 1 so it will be necessary to have a quiz in the near future. I will be looking at having a quiz on Chapter 1 November 17. If we experience a high number of absences, I may reschedule.

We are currently finishing up zero and negative exponents. We will begin scientific notation next shortly. A couple of specific skills I am looking for are:
1. Ability to apply the 3 exponent rules
2. Brackets vs no brackets when using negative numbers
3. How to change a negative exponent to a positive exponent
4. Apply the 3 exponent rules with negative numbers
5. Substituting a value for a variable, students must replace the variable with brackets at this point!

Good news...math books have finally arrived! Students will now have their own book to work from.

Sciences

We have spent a good deal of time on the first half of chapter 2. I would like to have a quiz on the following sections on November 10. To date, most classes have had symbols tests for # 1-20 on the periodic table. Students who have not written these will do them on November 10 with the other quiz.

homeroom - please return picture proofs

math I- worked on Pythagorean Theorum sheets. Some students did not have calculators. This makes it difficult to complete this sort of work. Students must come prepared with materials. Both sheets due for Wed.

Science I - Students wrote chapter 2 quiz.

math E - students worked on completing 1.1 and 1.2. Should have been completed during class. Work assigned in class and not completed must be done prior to next class or the student will get to far behind as a result.

science j - corrected sheets assigned p 44-47 to read and assigned 1,3,4 to do.

Science H,I,J - assigned 2 sheets to introduce chapter 2 topics. Both due for next class.

9I - math was missed this afternoon due to the Terry Fox run and pep rally. No new work assigned today.

9E Math - students should review BEDMAS fractions that were completed and corrected in class. Students have an old copy of a fractions quiz, they are too complete the first page for homework.

MATH EXTRA HELP ---- I am available for extra help any day except Monday. Students should arrange a time with me for lunch or after school.

Science J - complete assignment for next class.

Math 9I - we are working on adding and subtratcting fractions. It is important that students complete the work that is assigned. Students are to complete the adding/subtracting questions on the review sheets. There are step by step directions within the sheets if they need to refer to for help.

Science 9I, - students should know concepts up to chemical and physical change.
Science H,J -
Math 9E - # 6 on the sheet (same sheet as last night) is due for next class. Watch...signs, flip and switch for divison and try to use cross multiplication to reduce if you are feeling confident!

9A Math- Students who have not finished the fractions review booklet(last page) must have it done for next class. In addition, #2 a,c,e and #3 a,c,e on the back of last nights homework sheet.

9J Science - students should review up to and including chemical and physical reactions. There will be a chapter 1 quiz app. middle of next week. Sheet on Bill Nye video should be cpmplete for next class.

9J,9I Science - reviewed up to physical/chemical changes. Assigned #2, page 30 for homework.

9I Math - working on fraction review. There will be a quiz on integers Tuesday am.

9a Math - spent class going over questions that arose from the homework. Mid way during class, students had to get photos taken. As a result, homework questions had to be photocopied and passed out. Students are to complete the hand written side only. Students who had issues with the previous add and subtract questions should review those again .

Math 9E - wrote quiz today period 3. Returned period 6. Students are to look over errors tonight and we will go over the quiz next class. There will be an opportunity to rewrite provided the student does understand where the errors were made and makes the arrangements with me. We have started to review fractions. Students should review notes on how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.

Math 9I - quiz will be returned Friday as there was no math today.

Science I - working on the physical property of density. Students are to do # 2 and 4 page 25.

Science J,H - working on the physical property of density. Students are to complete #4 for class

Extra help is available!!! Students should see me to arrange a time. We will set a day shortly for math extra help.

Math 9E/9I - review Real Number System, integers and complete #1 on the last sheet in the booklet . You will need to complete these in your notebook. Please copy the question first and show your steps to complete each problem. The last two are challenging. You must be able to explain how you got your answer!

We will be reviewing substitution next Class. There will be a quiz Wed. on Real Number System, integers ( focus on reducing brackets and signs), BEDMAS, and substitution.

Science 9I,J,H - students completed a quiz on safety symbols. Students should know physical and chemical properties (text and class work). Homework - review physical and chemical properties and read notes on sect 1.3.

Welcome to 9I. Grade 9 year is filled with many experiences and challenges. I look forward to helping your student have a successful final year at Stonepark. Communication between home and school is very important. I will keep you posted through notes, email, homework page or SAS about upcoming events, projects, and tests. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS - Students are expected to take an active part in their own education. Responsibility of the students is as follows: a) attend regularly

We will establish a day for extra help after school. I am available at other times if the student makes arrangements with me.

Classroom Expectations

There are five areas that you are responsible for in order to have a productive year in grade 9. These areas are:

• attendance/promptness
• class contribution
• listening skills
• behavior
• preparedness
• homework

You must keep ALL work we complete, including tests and assignments, in order to prepare for exams. Please keep your work neat and organized. This will save you stress and time during your preparation for exams. I will not provide copies of notes, assignments, tests, etc... for students who have lost them.

Please refrain from asking to use the washroom during the first ten minutes of class. This is usually instructional time or we are correcting work. It is crucial that you are in class for this.
The school rule is no washroom breaks during periods 1, 3, and 5.

Please use the phone during breaks, lunch, or before and after school. Emergencies are an exception.

You are entirely responsible for work that you miss due to illness, extracurricular/curricular activities, family emergencies etc.... Please see me directly for missed work and I would be glad to help.

Do not hand in assignments if I should be absent. I will collect them the next day that I am here.

Absences from school can affect your progress dramatically. The more often you are here, the better your marks will be.

****Arriving late for class is an automatic detention.
Please bring a note or encourage your parents to e-mail me if you are absent or late. An unexcused absence will be considered “skipping”.
