Math Test Chapter 1
To do well on this test, I should be able to do the following:
find square roots to solve problems
use the Pythagorean theorem
simplify using the exponent rules (sections 1.5,1.8,1.11)
simplify (if possible) and evaluate exponents - BEDMAS (section 1.8)
simplify (if possible) and evaluate zero and negative exponents - BEDMAS (section 1.11)
simplify monomials (section 1.9)
change big and small numbers into scientific notation and vice versa (1.7 AND 1.12)
multiply and divide using scientific notation ( sections 1.7 and 1.12)
substitute values for variables; know the difference between ( )’s and no ( )’s. Example (-2)2 and -22

Science - study for quiz that will be on Tuesday.

November 5

Homeroom - please return H1N1 forms asap.

Math 9E - began scientific notation last few minutes of class. Students should be reviewing exponents concepts.

Math 9I - complete side 1 of math sheet on exponents

Science 9I, J,H - students should have page 58-59 #2,3,5 completed. Students should be familiar with activity 2.4(some classes have completed this activity) and section 2.5. Students should know how to test for : oxygen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Quiz on sect 2.1-2.7 on Tuesday.

Tuesday, November 3

home room notes: H1N1 forms have been sent home and are due back asap if you want your student vaccinated.

Math 9e/i
9e - homework : complete sheet "exponents" for next class.

Due to the high number of absences in all classes, it has been very difficult to move forward in our curriculum in moothly! I understand that when a student is out sick they may not be able to do much school work. However, when they return, each student will be responsible for making an effort to catch up on work missed. To help facilitate this, I will offer extra help at Luch time November 5 and 9 at 12:15 in my classroom. If a student will be absent for an extended period of time, please contact me and I can send home some work. I will post further extra help days shortly. Students may see me individually for a different arrangement. I will do my best to minimize assessments at this point as too many students are absent. We will have an assignment on exponents and scientific notation next week. We are almost finished of Chapter 1 so it will be necessary to have a quiz in the near future. I will be looking at having a quiz on Chapter 1 November 17. If we experience a high number of absences, I may reschedule.

We are currently finishing up zero and negative exponents. We will begin scientific notation next shortly. A couple of specific skills I am looking for are:
1. Ability to apply the 3 exponent rules
2. Brackets vs no brackets when using negative numbers
3. How to change a negative exponent to a positive exponent
4. Apply the 3 exponent rules with negative numbers
5. Substituting a value for a variable, students must replace the variable with brackets at this point!

Good news...math books have finally arrived! Students will now have their own book to work from.

Sciences

We have spent a good deal of time on the first half of chapter 2. I would like to have a quiz on the following sections on November 10. To date, most classes have had symbols tests for # 1-20 on the periodic table. Students who have not written these will do them on November 10 with the other quiz.

Chapter 2 Outline

 Questions 1,4, p. 47 Know : Pure Substances(compounds and elements), and Mixtures (heterogeneous mixtures and solutions)! Types and examples of each. See notes
 What is the Particle Theory?
 Properties and uses of Metals, p. 50-51
 Be able to describe electrolysis experiment p. 52. What is electrolysis?
 Different ways to test for elements. Be able to give examples, p. 54-55
 What is a chemical symbol and a chemical formula, p. 59
- 1-20 element symbols if not not already

Next sections to complete before having end of chapter quiz:

 Composition of air. What are: nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and 2 types of ozone.
 Draw structural diagrams Section 2.9
 Names and formulas p.64. Know about combining capacity and be able to draw and name compounds
^ there will be an assignment and a quiz on these 3 topics before a cummulative quiz on all sections in chapter 2.
